The Restoration

Restoration, or Carolean, refers to a style popular in England beginning with the restoration of the monarchy in the mid-seventeenth century. This period, roughly 1660 to the late 1680s, was marked by an increased preference for opulence, exotic materials, as well as Dutch and French artistic influences. With the return of Charles II from exile in Europe, outlandish and ornate works, characterized by scrolling ironwork and gilded accent pieces, quickly dominated.

The Restoration style replaced the severe Cromwellian style and embodied a more jovial and extravagant spirit. Jene’s Unique Design has incorporated this period into several new pieces. The “Carolean” wall panels showcase the wrought iron scrollwork and gilding popular during this era.  An antiqued mirror encases a hand painted anaglyptic design on faux leather.
